Search Engine Optimisation seems like a weird, misty thing to a lot of business owners. They know they need it; but don’t have a clue how it all works. There’s SEO, content marketing, PPC, performance optimisation…what does it all mean?!
Essentially, the aim of all this is to get recommended by the search engines and get more potential leads to your website.
There are other reasons, such as positioning yourself as an authority in your niche subject or area; but the above is pretty much the main root reason.
All of these are like ‘facets’ of online marketing. They aren’t going to do much good if you do them all once and hope it all happens overnight. They are meant to be used on an ongoing basis, as part of a thought-out plan.
Equally as important is the website you’re driving your potential leads to. If it’s difficult to use, or users cant find what they are looking for, then they will leave. We have short attention spans (are you still reading?!)
With that said, there are some things you could do today to help with your website’s ranking. Every journey begins with a single step!
5 SEO Tips to Implement Today
- Set up Google Analytics/Google Search Console: If you have a website and these aren’t set up, go do it now. They give you invaluable information on how people are finding your site, how long they’re staying and what they do whilst they’re there. Search Console also lets you know about issues it finds with links when crawling your site. Its all info that you can take to begin to form an online marketing plan.
- Choose your keywords: Check out Moz for some free tools to find the best keywords to target. Things like ‘body massage’ are too vague and too competitive. You want ones that are not highly competitive, that also have a decent monthly search volume (unless you have a healthy budget to put into ranking for more competitive ones).
- Don’t be spammy: Once you have your keywords, you can use a plugin like Yoast if you’re on WordPress to help set up your keywords for your posts/pages. Don’t stuff a list of keywords in every nook and cranny of your site. There’s still websites out there with them all lined up in/above the footer – you know the ones I mean. Search engines have muchly evolved since then and that isn’t cool. You will get penalised for keyword spamming.
- Get on your content game: Ok, even I need to pay attention here. In all fairness, I’ve been working out how to look after a tiny person so my content schedule went a bit tits up. Assuming you want a) people to visit your website and b) people to know that you know what you’re doing, you’ll need to be putting something out there regularly as often as possible. Sit down and brainstorm ideas for titles, create a schedule and stick to it; maybe try batching and schedule out your posts. Share them on social media. If you don’t have the time and/or the arsedness to produce regular content, then really consider outsourcing it as a worthwhile investment.
- Give your website an MOT: I can already feel another post coming on about how websites are like cars. Anyway, website performance is an influence factor on rankings (as well as whether your customers can use it), so you want to run regular performance checks to diagnose and then fix any issues that your website or it’s content may have.
